The dates for this year’s annual seminar and tournament with Kuda Tomosada Shinshi will be 23, 24, 2nd 25 September.  The exact format is still being finalized, but will be very close, if not exactly the same, as the past two years. As a reminder of that schedule, please see below:

Kata and Koubudo review.

Saturday, 24 September 0900 – Noon/2:00 – 5:00/7:00-9:00
Tournament

Sunday, 25 September 0900 – Noon/2:00 – 4:00
Kata/Waza Practice appropriate to rank.

I am in the process of trying to secure the gym at Oak Hills Christian College, the same venue as in years past.  This has not been finalized as yet, and I will make that announcement in a future post.

I have spoken to the staff at Ruttger’s Birchmont Lodge, and as of now all units except the one I have reserved are open, so if you are prepared to make the commitment, there should be no problem in getting a good reservation.  Of course there are many other lodging options in Bemidji, but most of us have had a very good experience at Ruttger’s over the years.   It may be a good idea if you let them know you are a part of our group as you make your reservation.

Please continue to check in on the website for further information and updates.

Preliminary 09 Seminar Info (posted 7/17/2009)

July 17th, 2009

As most are already aware, there is only one seminar site this year (Bemidji, MN), and this is likely to be the case for the foreseeable future.

Location

As in the past few years in Bemdji, the seminar will be held at Oak Hills Christian College, 1600 Oak Hills Rd SW, Bemidji, MN 56601.  This year, all three days of the seminar will be at Oak Hills, including Sunday.  In years past, we have had the Sunday sessions at the Bemidji Kobukan, but this year I am anticipating a higher turnout and want to have a facility large enough to accommodate everyone’s needs.

Dates

The seminar will take place 18 – 20 September 2009.

Friday:  0900 – Noon/2:00 – 5:00 p.m./7:00 – 9:00 p.m.

Saturday:  Same as above; tournament during first session.

Sunday:  10:00 – Noon/2:00 – 4:00

NEW!

This year, on Saturday morning, Kuda Shinshi wants to have a karate and kobudo kata tournament. Green Belts through Yondans are eligible and encouraged to participate. Below Green Belts are encouraged to watch and learn, Godans and above will be judging.

Divisions & Belt Rank – Kata Requirements

All tournament participants will have one designated kata that they are required to perform, and will do one additional kata of their choosing, but must do a kata that is appropriate to their rank (i.e. no Green Belts doing Chinto Kata, Brown Belts doing Kushanku Kata, etc.). Please see below for the designated kata. Also note that only Shodans through Yondans are eligible to participate in the Kobudo division.  There will be no separate divisions for children, but they are welcome to participate in the divisions as delineated below.

Brown Belts

Niseidi Sandan + 1 More Brown Belt Kata

Shodan/Nidan

KUDA SHINSHI’S 2009 SEMINAR posted 007/01/09

The following information was provide by Mr. Ettish:

The exact schedule is still being worked on, but the seminar will take place over the weekend of 18 September this year.  We will again be holding the event @ Oak Hills Christian College, in the same bldg as the past two years.

If you are planning on staying @ Ruttger's, I suggest you contact them as soon as you can.  Their phone number is 218 444 3463 or 1- 888- RUTTGER.  Their website is www.ruttger.com.  If you are not able to get a reservation @ Ruttger's, please contact me and I will try to help you.  Some lodging is available on the campus of Oak Hills.  It is hotel style, but has shared bathrooms.  I have not looked into it far enough to know if any dining is available.  Cost is 35 - $45 per night depending on what rooms you book.  Of course, there are numerous other lodging options in Bemidji.

Because Bemidji is the only seminar site, it may be that we have more people in attendance from out of town.  This may impact room availability @ Ruttger's so, as I said, if you plan on staying there, I would not delay too long.

The seminar format may be different from years past.  We are working that out, currently.  One thing that will be a major departure from the past is that Tomo Shinshi has been talking about having a Matsumura Kenpo Karate and Kobudo Kata Tournament during the seminar.  No further details @ this time because, again, we are still working this out.

Bemidji 2007 Kuda Shinshi Seminar (posted 9/19/07)

Bob Finley, Jecku Jacob, Anna Schmidt, Andre' Lopez, and William Glynn all attended the Seminar in Bemidji, MN.   Our students represented our dojo very well, and everyone enjoyed the training and interactions with all the students and instructors from other dojos.   We especially were pleased to get personal instruction from Kuda Shinshi, who took an interest in our three brown belt students.    It was also good to get to work out with Mr. Ettish, the Association Director over our dojo.   Click on this link for pictures from our trip.

Kuda Tomosada 2007 Seminars (Posted:  3/07/07)

This year the seminar w/Kuda Shinshi in Bemidji will be the weekend of the 14th of Sept.  The weekend prior (7th) will be Moline, the weekend after (21st) will be Seattle.  With such advanced notice, hopefully everyone will be able to plan ahead and be able to make it.   Please pass the word on to any Association. members you know.

Mr. Ettish supplied the following details regarding the Bemidji Seminar:  The exact location and cost has not yet been determined, but I am confident that the cost will remain within the same range as in previous yrs.  One thing that may be different from years past is the training schedule.  Although I have not yet set the schedule, look for it to be something like 3 hrs. in the morning, 3 hrs after lunch, and 2 hrs after supper on Fri. and Sat.  The after supper sessions will be less formal, with students working on whatever they choose, with help from the Directors on site.  Sunday (in Bemidji, at least) I am planning on having an informal workout for those who stay over and want to continue.  Kuda Shinshi and some of us talked about this last year, and he decided to give it a try.
